Power pop with an emotional edge
Happy Hate Me Nots combined fast, forceful playing with melodic songwriting, becoming one of the defining bands associated with Sydney’s Waterfront Records.
The first line-up · 1984–1986
Paul Berwick and Neil Toddie moved on from Positive Hatred to form Happy Hate Me Nots with Tim McKay and Peter Lennon. Mark Nicholson replaced Toddie before the group recorded its first compilation appearance and early Waterfront singles.
Scrap and Out · 1986–1988
Christian Houllemare
replaced Lennon on bass and Mick Searson took over on drums. This line-up recorded Scrap, the Rob Younger
-produced album Out and the singles that established the group’s combination of hard-edged guitars and melodic pop.
A Place to Live and return
A Place to Live followed in 1991. The group later reconvened with Matt Galvin and returning drummer Mark Nicholson for Time and the State, released in 2012.
