Garage rock with a pop instinct

Hoodoo Gurus joined sharp hooks, garage-rock drive and pop-culture storytelling in one of Australia’s longest-running and most widely travelled rock catalogues.

Le Hoodoo Gurus · 1981–1982

Dave Faulkner, James Baker, Rod Radalj and Kimble Rendall formed the first line-up in Sydney. The debut single Leilani appeared under the name Le Hoodoo Gurus before Brad Shepherd and Clyde Bramley joined and the shortened name became permanent.

The classic album run · 1984–1998

From Stoneage Romeos through Blue Cave, the band paired Faulkner’s songwriting with an evolving rhythm section. Mark Kingsmill replaced Baker in 1984, while Rick Grossman replaced Bramley in 1988. The group split after its farewell tour in 1998.

Return and continuation · 2003–present

Hoodoo Gurus reformed in 2003, released Mach Schau, Purity of Essence and Chariot of the Gods, and continued with Nik Rieth on drums from 2015.
