Rhythm and blues pushed through a garage-punk amplifier
The Breadmakers built a long-running Melbourne institution from Louisiana rhythm and blues, 1960s garage rock and a taste for the ultimate rave-up.
Melbourne beginnings
The original line-up brought together musicians from The Puritans, The Cracked Jaffers, The Bo-Weevils
and The Unheard. The band’s name came from a Slim Harpo song.
The Corduroy years
The early albums Hoodoo Nightspot and Twelve More Miles to Midnight established the group’s raw rhythm-and-blues sound. The Night the Moon Forgot to Rise, Cool! and The Case of the Smouldering Redhead followed as the Breadmakers toured beyond Australia.
Still searching for the rave-up
After Night of the Cobra and Lost, Live & Unleashed, the band returned with a self-titled album recorded and mixed by Mikey Young. The same five-piece line-up made Lonesome Sundown, released in 2025.
