From punk-pop to swamp rock
Led by [Kim Salmon](/artists/kim-salmon/), The Scientists moved from the first wave of Perth punk to the bass-heavy, distorted sound that made their 1980s recordings an international underground reference point.
Perth beginnings · 1978–1981
The band emerged from the Exterminators and the Invaders. Early line-ups around Kim Salmon
, James Baker and Rod Radalj developed a melodic punk sound documented by Frantic Romantic, The Scientists E.P. and the self-titled album often called the Pink Album.
Sydney, London and the swamp years · 1981–1987
Salmon rebuilt the group with Boris Sujdovic, Tony Thewlis and Brett Rixon. Blood Red River, This Heart Doesn’t Run on Blood, This Heart Doesn’t Run on Love, You Get What You Deserve! and Human Jukebox established the darker, repetitive sound most closely associated with The Scientists.
Reunions and new recordings · 1995–present
After reunion appearances in 1995 and from 2007 onward, the band returned to recording with Sedition, 9H₂O.SiO₂ and Negativity.
