Garage rock sharpened into power pop
The Stems joined 1960s garage-rock drive to the melodic songwriting of [Dom Mariani](/artists/dom-mariani/) and Richard Lane.
Citadel beginnings
The original Perth line-up recorded Make You Mine, She’s a Monster and Tears Me in Two before signing to Citadel. Rob Younger
and Alan Thorne produced the 1986 EP Love Will Grow – Rosebud Volume One.
At First Sight
Julian Matthews and David Shaw completed the line-up that made At First Sight, Violets Are Blue. Released in 1987, the album brought the band’s garage roots and Mariani–Lane songwriting into a concise guitar-pop record.
Returns
The Stems reformed in 2003, released Heads Up in 2007 and resumed live work from 2013. Their later line-ups joined Mariani, Matthews and Shaw with Ashley Naylor and Davey Lane.
